Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi: Know all sixteen steps of the Shodashopachara Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi

Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi
- Women bathe in water with sesame (til) and gooseberry (amla) before sunrise.
- They dress up in new outfits, bangles, and sindoor, among other things.
- Roots are eaten by fasting women.
- Puja is performed beneath a Banyan tree. If a tree is not accessible, a stick of Banayan tree is dug into the ground, and if that is not possible, a portrait of the Banyan tree is painted on wood with turmeric and sandal wood paste.
- Some women worship Satyavan and Savitri idols and offer vermilion and other gifts to them.
- Banyan tree is given water, flowers, rice, gramme seeds, and special delicacies prepared at home.
- Women perform parikrama by chanting and weaving yellow and red thread around the Banyan tree.
- They listen to Satyavan and Savitri’s narrative.
Prasad is handed out. - Women help the destitute by donating food, clothing, and other necessities.
This vrat is celebrated by women with great enthusiasm and devotion.
- Dhyana (ध्यान)
The meditation of Lord Brahma and His spouse Savitri should be the first part of the puja. Dhyana should be performed in front of the Lord Brahma and Savitri statues that have previously been placed in front of you. While concentrating on the deity, chant the following mantra.
पद्मपत्रसमासिनं ब्राह्मणं चा चतुर्मुखम।
उपवितधरम देवामी
वमोट्संगता तस्य सावित्री ब्राह्मणः प्रिया।
आदित्यवर्णम धर्मजनं सक्षममलाकरम तथा:
धर्मराजम पितृपतिम भुतनाम कर्मसाक्षिणं।
कलादंदधरम देवं महिषारुधमेव चा
चिंतायामी च देवेशम सर्वप्रनिहिताय वै।
विनं दधानं देवर्षिं नारदम चिंतायम्याहं॥
- Avahana (आवाहन)
Following Dhyanam, say the following Mantra to invoke Lord Brahma with Lokamata Savitri, Satyavrata with his wife Savitri, and Yama Devata by demonstrating Avahan Mudra (Avahan Mudra is formed by joining both palms and folding both thumbs inwards).
ब्राह्मण साहित्यम देवीम सावित्रीम लोकमातरम्।
सत्यव्रतम् च सावित्री यमं चवाहय्याम्यः
- Asana (आसन)
After Avahana, place five flowers in Anjali (by combining the palms of both hands) and place them in front of Lord Brahma’s Murti or idol with Lokamata Savitri, Satyavrata and his wife Savitri, and Yama Devata to offer flowers formed seat while singing the Mantra.
ब्राह्मण सह सावित्री सत्यवत्सहित प्रिय।
हेमासनं गृह्यतम तू धर्मराज सुरेश्वर।
- Padya (पाद्य)
After giving flowers to Lord Brahma’s consort Savitri, Dharmaraja Yama, and Satyavan’s consort Savitri, wash their feet with water while singing the Mantra.
गंगाजलम समनितम पद्यार्थं ब्राह्मणः प्रिये।
भक्ति दत्तम धर्मराज सावित्री प्रतिगृह्यताम्॥
- Arghya (अर्घ्य)
After the Padya offering, chant the Mantra and offer water to Satyavan’s consort Savitri for head Abhishekam.
भक्ति समाहितं तोयम फलपुष्पसमनवितम्।
अर्घ्य गृहण सावित्री मामा सत्यव्रतप्रिय॥
- Achamaniya (आचमनीय)
After the Arghya offering, give Lord Brahma and Savitri water for Achamana (drinking water) while chanting the Mantra.
सुगंधि साहा कपूरम सुरभि स्वदु शीतलम।
ब्राह्मण सह सावित्री कुरुश्वचामनीयकाम्य
- Panchamrita Snana (पञ्चामृत स्नान)
After Achamaniya, give Devi Savitri a bath with Panchamrita (a concoction of milk, curd, honey, Ghee, and sugar) while reciting the Mantra.
पायो दधी घृतं चैव शरकारा मधुसमुतम।
पंचामृत माया दत्तम् स्नानार्थम देवी गृह्यतम॥
- Snanam (स्नान)
After Panchamrita Snana, say the Mantra and offer water to Lord Bhrahma’s consort Savitri, Satyavan, Savitri, and Dharmaraja Yama for bathing.
मंदाकिनाः संनितमुदकम ब्राह्मण: प्रिय।
सावित्री धर्मराजे स्नानार्थम प्रतिग्रह्यम्।
- Vastra (वस्त्र)
Offer fresh cotton clothing to Satyavan’s consort Savitri after Snanam, while chanting the Mantra.
सुक्ष्मतंतुमयं वस्त्रायुगमम करपाससम्भवं।
सावित्री सत्यवतकांटे भक्ति दत्तम प्रग्रह्यतम॥
- Upavita (उपवीत)
After the Vastra offering, chant the Mantra and offer Upavita to Lord Brahma’s spouse Lokamata Savitri, Dharmaraja Yama, and Satyavan’s consort Savitri.
सावित्री सत्यवतकांटे धर्मराज सुरेश्वर।
सावित्री ब्राह्मण सरधमुपवितं प्रज्ञातम।
- Bhushana (भूषण)
After presenting the Upavita, decorate Lord Brahma with jewels while chanting the Mantra.
भूषणानी सी दिव्यानी मुक्ताहरयुतानी सी।
त्वदार्थमुपक्क्रप्तनि गृहण शुभलोचन
- Chandana (चन्दन)
After the jewellery sacrifice, give Devi Savitri a perfume while chanting the Mantra.
कुमकुमगुरुकरपुरा कस्तूरीरोचनयुतम।
चंदनम ते माया दत्तम सावित्री प्रतिगृह्यताम्॥
- Akshata (अक्षत)
After the Chandana offering, offer Devi Savitri Akshata (unbroken rice) while chanting the Mantra.
अक्षतश्च सुरश्रेष्ठ कुमकुमकतः सुशोभन।
माया निवेदिता भक्ति गृहण परमेश्वरी
- Saubhagyadravya (सौभाग्यद्रव्य)
After the Akshata offering, offer Haldi, Kumkum, and Sindoor to Devi Savitri as Saubhagya Dravya while singing the Mantra.
हरिद्रकुमकुमं चैव सिंधुराम कज्जलनवितं।
सौभाग्यद्रव्यसम्ययुक्तम्:
- Pushpa (पुष्प)
Offer flowers to Devi Savitri after the Saubhagyadravya offering, while repeating the Mantra.
माल्यादिनी सुगंधिनी मल्यादिनी वै प्रभा।
मयारितानी पुजार्थम पुष्पनि प्रतिगृह्यताम्॥
- Anga Puja (अङ्ग पूजा)
Now worship those Gods who are Savitri’s body parts. Take Chandana, Akshata, and Pushpa in your left hand and place them near Savitri’s statue or image with your right hand while chanting the Mantra (s).
सावित्रै नमः पादौ पुजायामी।
प्रसवित्यै नमः जंघे पुजायामी।
कमलापत्रक्षयै नमः कटि पूजामी।
भूतधारिंयै नमः उदाराम पुजायामी।
गायत्रयै नमः कंठं पुजायामी।
ब्रह्मणः प्रियायै नमः मुखं पुजायामी।
सौभाग्यादत्रै नमः शिरः पुजायामी।
- Atha Brahmasatya Puja (अथ ब्रह्मसत्य पूजा)
Worship Lord Brahma and Satyavan after Savitri’s Anga Puja. Take Gandha, Akshata, and Pushpa in your left hand and place them near the idol or image of Lord Brahma, while chanting the Mantra with your right hand (s).
धत्रे नमः पड़ौ पूजामी।
विधात्रे नमः जंघे पूजामी।
सृष्टे नमः उरु पुजायामी।
प्रजापताये नमः मेध्रम पुजायामी।

- Deepam (दीपं)
Offer Deep to Lokamata Savitri after the Dhupa offering, while chanting the Mantra.
चाक्षुरदम सर्वलोकनम तिमिरस्य निवारनम।
अर्टिक्यं कल्पितं भक्ति गृहण परमेश्वरी
- Naivedya (नैवेद्य)
Offer Naivedya to Lokamata Savitri after the Deepam offering, while chanting the Mantra.
अन्नं चतुर्विद्म् स्वदु रसैः शद्भिः समन्वयम्।
माया निवेदितं भक्ति नैवेद्य प्रतिगृह्यताम्
- Phala (फल)
Offer fruits to Lokamata Savitri after the Naivedya offering, while chanting the Mantra.
इदम फलम मायादेव स्थापितम पुरतस्तव।
