Ekadashi fasts are considered more beneficial if they are very challenging. Lord Vishnu is honoured with the fasting day of Vijaya Ekadashi, and those who observe it faithfully are blessed with happiness and salvation. The discipline of fasting on Ekadashi can also strengthen a person’s will and fortitude. Among the 24 Ekadashis that occur throughout the year in Sanatan Dharma, the one that falls in the month of May, known as Vijaya Ekadashi, holds special significance.
In the same vein as Vijaya Dashami, this Ekadashi is revered as an auspicious day. Those who are fasting on this particular Ekadashi typically do so in honour of Lord Vishnu, praying to him throughout the day for his blessings and favour.

Rituals of Vijaya Ekadashi
- If you want to take the vow of Ekadashi fast, you need to get up early on the day of Ekadashi, wash your body, and put on clean clothes.
- Dashami is the day to build an altar and worship the seven grains and pulses (urad, moong, wheat, gramme, barley, rice, and millet) that make up the sapta dhan.
- Create an urn for it out of gold, silver, or clay, based on your budget.
- Shri Vishnu’s Kalash should be filled with Panch Pallav, or five different leaves (Peepal, Gular, Ashok, Mango, and Vat), and offered to him on the day of Ekadashi.
- Send your respects to Lord Vishnu by lighting candles and offering him sandalwood, flowers, fruit, and basil.
- Throughout the day of fasting, you should read or listen to the tale of Lord Vishnu.
- Jagran is performed at night in front of the Kalash.
- Donate the Kalash to a Brahmin or Pandit on Dwadashi.
- Break your fast from Ekadashi with satvik foods on Dwadashi.
Significance of Vijaya Ekadashi
Vijaya Ekadashi is the name given to the waning moon that occurs during the Krishna Paksha of the Falgun month. According to the meaning of the term, one who observes this Ekadashi fast in accordance with the letter and spirit of the law will never lose a battle with their adversaries. Many historical monarchs and emperors credit this fast with helping them triumph in decisive battle. The Puranas also detail the fasting rituals observed on Vijaya Ekadashi.
According to legend, if one fasts on Vijaya Ekadashi, they would be victorious no matter how grave their situation or how close their foes are. People who fast on Vijaya Ekadashi are considered to be granted an escape from all pain and misery.
